In a the second of a two-part episode of the Understanding the Science of You Podcast, Graham Skidmore continues his thought-provoking discussions with Todd Matzkin-Bridger, delving into personal growth, societal change, and the intersection of technology and human potential.
What it Means to Be "At Peace"
Graham has spent much time reflecting on what it truly means to be “at peace.” In his view, peace is not the absence of challenges, but the ability to respond to them with clarity and intention.
“I’m no longer trying to control what’s going on around me. I’m understanding that I just need to look for how I’m being guided, and things work out,” Graham explained. “I’ve learned that peace comes when I’m able to step back and trust the process, instead of trying to change things outside of my control.”
This shift in perspective has allowed Graham to embrace the messy, unpredictable nature of life. Instead of trying to fix everything, he’s found peace in knowing when to act and when to accept the moment as it is.
Artificial Intelligence: A Complement, Not a Replacement
The conversation then turns to artificial intelligence (AI) and its role in shaping the future. While Graham acknowledges the immense potential AI holds, especially for increasing efficiency in processing vast amounts of data, he emphasizes that AI should never replace the irreplaceable qualities of humanity.
“Why are we so quick to assume that we can’t improve ourselves as well?” Graham asked. “Why aren’t we more focused on how we can continue to grow, innovate, and think critically?”
For Graham, AI should be seen as a tool to enhance human capabilities, not replace them. He sees its value most clearly when used for specific tasks, but he remains cautious about the idea of handing over too much to technology.
“When it comes to things like creativity, empathy, and compassion, those are human qualities,” said Graham. “AI can’t replicate the depth of human experience, and that’s where we, as humans, need to stay in the driver’s seat.”
Instead of fearing AI taking over jobs or roles, Graham believes it’s essential for us to continue evolving and to focus on innovation. AI should support human growth, not limit it.
Spirituality and Reincarnation: What Happens After We Die?
The conversation takes a spiritual turn as Graham reflects on his views on reincarnation and the journey of consciousness. He shares his belief that life is not about an endpoint, but rather an ongoing process of learning and growth.
“I believe we incarnate to learn, to figure things out through trial and error,” he said. “It’s about finding wisdom in every experience, knowing that each life is a piece of a larger puzzle.”
Graham’s spiritual outlook sees life and death as part of a larger cycle of evolution, with each experience contributing to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the universe. For him, reincarnation is not about an afterlife but a continuation of growth, an opportunity to return and make a greater impact.
“Everything—whether it’s humans or animals—has purpose,” Graham said. “We’re all part of this collective consciousness that continues to grow and evolve.”
This view encourages respect for all living beings and a deeper understanding of the interconnections between us. Graham believes that by embracing these interconnected experiences, we can all contribute to a more compassionate and conscious world.
The Perception of Self vs. How Others Perceive Us
As the conversation draws to a close, Graham reflects on how his self-perception has evolved over time. While he has always been driven and passionate, he’s learned to see the value others have always seen in him, even when he didn’t recognize it himself.
“There’s a lot of things I think are new to me that aren’t new to others,” Graham reflected. “Sometimes, it’s hard to see what’s obvious to the people around you, but it’s only when I started opening up that I saw the value others had always seen in me.”
This shift in perspective has led Graham to embrace more vulnerability in his journey. By opening up to the feedback and perspectives of others, he’s been able to expand his view of himself and the role he plays in the world. Graham recognizes that the more he can be transparent about his growth, the more he can inspire others to do the same.
